Recently, Mike hired me to help him lose weight, help ease his chronic pain and to improve his health.

Nothing earth shattering here, because most people hire personal trainers for the reasons above. Because potential clients have usually have tried and failed beforehand, and Mike is no different.

And besides the challenges of losing weight and being an adult in this 24/7 non-stop world, Mike has job that takes him away from home for 6 months of the year.

No, it’s not an oil rig job.

He’s a relief captain of a tow boat, working around the Mississippi river, delivering materials and guiding barges in and out of ports. He’s the main man, managing a crew and being answerable to his bosses.

His shifts are 6 hours on, 6 hours off over a 24-hour period. And even though he has 12 hours off, (some of it for sleep of course) he’s the go to person whether he’s working or not.

And as you can imagine, his stress levels are high.

However, Mike has a few things in his favor

  1. He is extremely determined
  2. The company he works for put a treadmill in the engine room

Keep in mind the engine room is loud, has metal floors, a treadmill moves when the boat moves, and it’s in a confined space.

Because of these limitations, Mike can’t exercise for too long (adding to his stress), floor exercises and exercises that require space or equipment is out too.

Taking all this all into account, this is what his 3 day a week routine looks like

1.10 minutes on the treadmill

2. 10 minutes of resistance band exercises (3 exercises done back to back)

  • 3. 10 minutes on the treadmill
  • 4. 10 minutes of resistance band exercises (3 exercises done back to back)

And due to his shift work (and the rocking boat) hindering his ability to sleep, I’ve added massage and stretches to help him de stress and relax.

So far, he’s making it work to the best of his ability. And if he can do it, so can you with a little determination and problem solving from yours truly.
